SSC Stenographer Grade C / D

Stenographer exams include shorthand plus a typing / transcription stage. This page practices the typing half only — shorthand dictation is not simulated.

Grade C/D also scores shorthand. Use this for transcription speed and accuracy, not as a full stenography mock.

US QWERTY keyboard

Default US ANSI board. Letters sit where English typists expect them. The on-screen board and this table follow the layout you picked in the exam settings. Set the same layout in your operating system so the keys you press match English on this page.

Home-row fingers rest on A S D F and J K L semicolon. Capitals and number-row marks use Shift.

This is the layout of most US clerical tests and of the English lessons on this site.

How to type letters on US QWERTY

Each row is a character that is not a plain unshifted English letter on that physical key. Shift and AltGr chords change with the layout.

Grade C and D as shorthand jobs first

Staff Selection Commission Stenographer Grade C and D recruitment combines shorthand skill with transcription. The Commission, not this website, sets dictation speed and transcription time. Grade C and D posts sit in ministries and attached offices. Daily work is dictation, transcription, and assisting officers with files. Typing speed without shorthand does not make you a stenographer under the official rules. This page only trains the typing half after you can already take notes from speech.

A computer-based examination is followed by a skill test: dictation at a published words-per-minute rate, then transcription on a computer in English or Hindi within a fixed time. People who only grind this visible passage still fail because they never practised from their own outlines. People who only grind dictation still fail when transcription is slow or dirty. Pair live audio with this keyboard. Do not treat a 40 WPM prose score as Grade C proof.

Why a prose WPM cannot replace dictation outlines

The official skill test starts with spoken matter. If you cannot take shorthand notes at the notified speed, a high typing result will not save you. Errors in outlines become typing errors later. Grade C dictation is commonly faster than Grade D. Match your audio practice to the grade you applied for. Private institute certificates help you prepare; they do not replace the SSC skill test. Educational and age limits sit in the Stenographer notice.

This rehearsal uses a ten-minute clerical-style clock and a 40 WPM practice gate so transcription fingers stay warm. Official transcription windows and fonts follow the notice. Backspace policy, if printed, follows the Commission. Visible text is easier than typing from your own notes. After each audio sitting, transcribe immediately on a computer, then use this page to keep the keyboard from becoming the bottleneck. Shorthand remains the gate you cannot skip.

Transcription time after the spoken paper

Transcription time is longer for Hindi in many notices. English and Hindi stenography streams are separate. You cannot mix an English dictation with a Hindi transcription. Choose the medium you will take in the real skill test and practise that keyboard layout, often InScript for Hindi. This page lets you pick a paper language before the clock starts. It does not play dictation audio and does not score outlines. Streams never mix after dictation.

Once notes exist, the job is clean, fast typing of names, dates, and administrative phrases. Court and ministry stenographers type from speech under time pressure. Build that vocabulary in custom lists after you use this exam page: officer titles, file phrases, and the spellings you keep missing. Accuracy on proper nouns is the workplace product. A reckless sprint that garbles a date is a failing transcription even if the raw speed looked fine.

English stream versus Hindi stream with no mixing

Pick one official stream and stay there. English QWERTY and Hindi InScript are different papers with different transcription clocks in many years. Phonetic mobile Hindi is a weak predictor of a lab machine. If the notice is English, stop training only Devanagari social-media habits the month of the test. If the notice is Hindi, Roman Hindi will not be scored as Devanagari. Lock the layout in week one of a four-week plan, not in the parking lot.

Grade C and Grade D also differ in dictation speed inside the same family. Do not borrow a friend’s Grade D audio plan for a Grade C application. Read the advertisement for the grade you actually filled. This site cannot tell those grades apart from your settings box. You must match audio elsewhere. Use this page after dictation practice to make transcription fast and clean, not as a full stenography mock.

Pairing audio dictation with this transcription drill

A practical week has two clocks. First, take dictation at the notified speed and transcribe from your notes under the official time idea. Second, sit this visible paper so the keyboard is not the slow part. If transcription from notes is dirty, the problem is outlines or reading your own writing, not this website. If notes are clean but fingers stall, this page is the right extra. Do not hide in prose WPM because audio feels harder.

Log four columns: date, grade you are training, language, and whether the sitting was audio or visible. If accuracy on visible text is already high but audio transcription fails, buy more dictation hours, not more of this pack. If both fail, slow down, fix outlines, then rebuild speed. The caveat on this card is honest: Grade C and D also score shorthand. Use this for transcription speed and accuracy, not as a complete stenography mock.

Ministry stenographer work once you are in the cadre

Selected stenographers type from speech in offices that still run on files, meetings, and sudden dictation. Accuracy on names, dates, and legal or administrative phrases is the job. Exam transcription is a timed burst from a set passage or from notes of a set dictation. Workplace transcription is interruption and unfinished sentences. Keep the layout you qualified on. Probation is a poor time to discover you cannot take Hindi on InScript or English on a stiff lab keyboard.

A private typing certificate does not replace the Commission’s skill test, and a practice score here does not enter any SSC file. Carry identity and qualification papers as the notice lists them. Labs match photo and signature. The candidate name in this settings box is only a local label. If your advertisement is for a ministerial typist without shorthand, you opened the wrong card. Stenographer Grade C and D are shorthand-first posts.

Grade C speed versus Grade D speed in the same family

Treat the two grades as related advertisements, not as one cutoff. Dictation WPM is commonly higher for Grade C. Transcription allowances can differ by language. This page’s 40 WPM practice gate is a transcription floor, not a promise that either grade will print that number for typing alone. Always open the current Stenographer notice. If a paragraph here conflicts with that PDF, the PDF wins.

Four weeks is enough to raise transcription fingers only if outlines already exist. Week one: confirm grade, language, and dictation speed. Week two: daily audio plus one visible sitting. Week three: full transcription windows from notes without collapsing. Week four: rest the hands the day before the lab and reread instructions. People who start shorthand the week after the CBT result are usually too late.
