Free typing practice: test your speed, then learn

US QWERTY

A timed test is the fastest way to see your real words per minute — not a guess. India Typing Test is a free typing test with a path of English lessons, a live translator for bilingual practice, and Indian typing-exam mocks for SSC, railways, courts, and healthcare desks. Start with a scored minute, use lessons to fix weak keys, translate when you need another language on screen, then open a skill-test paper when you want government-style timing.

Measure speed in more than one hundred languages, follow fifty English lessons from the home row outward, paste your own exam words, and keep going without an account. No sign-up. No ads. Built for phones and desktops.

Typing test

Measure your speed with a timed or word-count test

A typing test asks you to copy a passage while the clock runs or while a word target counts down. When you finish, you see scored WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, and errors. Most people use sixty seconds as the standard minute: long enough to show real rhythm and short enough to repeat every day.

Use a 15-second sprint to warm up, a one-minute test for a score you can compare week to week, and a two-minute or 100-word run when you need endurance. Quote mode trains full sentences. Custom mode is for names, codes, and exam vocabulary that generic passages never include. Language can be changed on the test page, including native script with your system IME.

WPM here uses the usual five-character word, spaces included. That is the convention most public typing tests use. This site is practice, not an official government exam, so treat your result as training data. Aim a little above any cutoff you care about, and keep accuracy high.

Typing lessons

Typing lessons from the home row outward

Typing lessons teach the keys you do not yet own. The English course is fifty stages: F and J, the rest of the home row, nearby letters, the full alphabet, numbers, capitals, punctuation, then sentence speed. You pass at 90 percent accuracy before the next lesson unlocks, so you cannot skip ahead with sloppy habits.

Lessons are the right tool if you still look at the keyboard, stall on numbers, or fail punctuation in a typing test. Progress stays in this browser. After a cluster of lessons, take a short typing speed test. If the new keys survive in mixed text, move on. If they do not, repeat the lesson. Structured practice plus a real test is how speed actually rises.

Translator

Live translation for bilingual typing practice

The translator on India Typing Test is a live, as-you-type language converter for typing practice: English to Hindi, Spanish, Arabic, French, Mandarin, Tamil, Bengali, and 100+ other languages, plus the reverse direction when you swap source and target. Type a sentence, name list, or exam phrase in one box and watch a running translation appear in the other, then paste that wording into a custom typing test so you can drill native script, IME input, and bilingual clerical vocabulary. It is built for learners and skill-test prep — short passages, job words, and language switching — not for certified, legal, medical, or notarized document translation, and not as a substitute for an official exam paper in another language.

Typing exams

India, US, Australia, and Indonesia typing exam practice

Typing exam pages here are practice skill tests. India keeps SSC CHSL, CGL DEST, stenographer typing, RRB, High Courts, state boards, police ministerial desks, and workplace papers. The United States adds OPM-style clerical, USPS clerk/data-entry, CalCareers-style certificates, and an NCRA stenotype warning card. Australia has AS 2708-style keyboarding. Indonesia has CPNS instansi ketik practice — not CAT SKD.

Each exam has its own URL in the form typing-exam/exam-name-typing-test. Open a paper, enter a practice name, pick the paper language that exam actually uses, then copy a government-style passage into the answer box with the clock on top. Copy and paste are blocked. Duration and WPM gates on the card are training targets only. The official notification still controls time, language, key-depression formula, and whether backspace is allowed.

SSC · 35 WPM

SSC CHSL (LDC / JSA)

Combined Higher Secondary Level typing / skill test for Lower Division Clerk and Junior Secretariat Assistant. English is often a 10-minute run toward about 35 WPM (around 2000 key depressions).

SSC · 35 WPM

SSC CGL DEST (Tax Assistant / Postal Assistant)

Data Entry Skill Test used in CGL for posts such as Tax Assistant. Practice with mixed letters, numbers, and punctuation the way DEST screens do.

RRB · 30 WPM

RRB NTPC (Graduate & Under-Graduate)

Railway Recruitment Board NTPC typing skill test. Many notices sit near 30 WPM English / 25 WPM Hindi — always read the current CEN.

Delhi HC · 35 WPM

Delhi High Court (JJA / PA / Clerk)

Practice for court clerical / JJA / PA / Court Master style English typing, usually in the 30–40 WPM band. Official papers may also offer Hindi or a regional language.

US OPM · 40 WPM

40+ WPM standard across much private hiring, with figures and punctuation.

Example use cases

How different people might use this site

These are hypothetical examples of practice routines, not customer reviews and not results from real users.

Hypothetical example · Exam prep

A clerical exam candidate

Someone preparing for an SSC or state skill test might start each morning with a 60-second English test, then spend ten minutes on the number-row lessons. The score is practice data, not a certificate — the point is to sit a little above the published cutoff before exam day.

Practice scenario · Hiring screen

A support or data-entry team

A hiring manager who needs a quick words-per-minute check can send candidates here with no login. The timed test is the measure. Exam mocks are for people who need a government-style box, not a substitute for the official hall software.

Sample routine · Job vocabulary

A medical biller or clinic clerk

Generic passages never include diagnosis codes or clinic names. Custom mode lets you paste that list and drill until the hard words stop causing stalls, then confirm the work on a timed test.

Illustrative case · Bilingual work

Someone who types in two languages

A student or clerk who switches scripts can take an English minute and a native-script minute on the same test page, then use the translator to preview a sentence in the other language before practicing it.

Example path · Touch typing

A court clerk trainee

If looking at the keys is still the habit, the fifty-lesson path is the right start: home row, then nearby letters, then punctuation. Repeat any lesson that fails the accuracy bar, then try a two-minute test when the motion feels calmer.

Possible use · Short drills

Anyone who quits long passages

When a full quote feels heavy, open a short private-sector paper or a 15-second sprint. Use that as a drill between lessons, then come back to a one-minute test to see whether the speed transferred.

Typing test FAQ

Start with whether this site fits a class, a job, or an exam — then how scoring works and how to practice.

No. India Typing Test is a free practice site. Official government typing tests, SSC skill tests, state clerical exams, court exams, and similar assessments use their own software, their own passages, and their own scoring rules. Some count backspace, some freeze the clock, some require a specific font or only English, and some use a different formula for net speed. You should always read the latest notification for the exam you are taking. What this site is good for is building the underlying skill: reading a line, typing it cleanly, keeping accuracy high, and lasting for one or two minutes without panic. Practice here until your speed is comfortably above the published cutoff, then, if the agency provides a sample interface, also practice on that. Never assume a 40 WPM result here is an official certificate.
