Lower Division Clerk work after a CHSL allotment
Successful candidates typically join as Lower Division Clerk or Junior Secretariat Assistant in central ministries, attached offices, and departments that still use the CHSL channel. A few cycles also fill Data Entry Operator vacancies with a DEST rather than a running-matter paper, so you must read the post code in the latest notice. Daily work is file noting, receipts, dak, Excel, and e-office typing in English or Hindi. Speed matters less on the desk than clean names, file numbers, and dates.
Building a buffer above the usual English line is useful because exam-day keyboards, noise, and a frozen backspace setting can drop net speed. The workplace will not give you a single polished paragraph. It will give you interrupted sentences and proper nouns. That is why this rehearsal still asks you to pick a language and a layout before the clock starts: those are the same decisions a lab will lock.
When the skill module can erase a high CBT rank
Recent CHSL cycles use a computer-based examination followed by a skill or typing test and document verification. Written tiers decide the merit list. The typing or DEST module is usually qualifying: falling below the published speed or key-depression standard can remove you even with a comfortable written rank. Treat the cutoff as a pass-or-fail gate, then keep a practice buffer so nerves do not drop you under the line.

Eligibility, age, and nationality rules sit in the official advertisement, not in a browser result. The 35 WPM line and the 10,500 key-depression story
For LDC and JSA, English typing is commonly a ten-minute running-matter test aimed at about 35 words per minute, sometimes described as roughly 10,500 key depressions per hour. Hindi is often near 30 WPM or 9,000 key depressions per hour. This page uses a ten-minute clock and a 35 WPM practice gate for the LDC/JSA habit. Software, font, and whether backspace is allowed are decided by the Commission for that cycle.
Coaching rooms compress the English line into “2000 key depressions in ten minutes.” That is a simplification, not a law you can argue at the lab door. Convert whatever the current notice prints. If it says DEST for your post code, this running-matter rehearsal is the wrong primary drill. If it says Hindi 9,000 key depressions, train Devanagari, not a phone phonetic habit. Net accuracy after errors still decides most qualifying sittings.
English QWERTY versus Hindi InScript on CHSL day
The skill test is usually offered in English and Hindi. English is typed on a standard QWERTY layout. Hindi in government labs is often InScript; phonetic IMEs that you use at home may not be installed on exam machines. Practice both scripts if the notice lets you choose, then lock the language you will actually take. This page can switch paper language before start; it cannot install InScript on a lab PC.
English WPM and Hindi WPM are not comparable numbers because the scripts and input methods differ. Roman Hindi is not Hindi typing. If you will sit Devanagari, build conjunct and matra accuracy on a desktop keyboard, then return to timed running matter. If you will sit English, stop training only on Hindi social-media keyboards. The admit-card instructions name the medium. Follow that line, not a friend’s memory of an older cycle.
LDC running matter compared with a DEO DEST slot
Running-matter typing is continuous prose: letters, spaces, and ordinary punctuation, scored as speed plus accuracy. DEST is a data-entry skill test with a higher density of numerals, codes, and mixed characters. LDC and JSA posts usually need the typing test. Candidates fail DEST more often on zeros, ones, hyphens, and capitalisation than on plain words. Memorising this site’s finite passage pack is wasted effort; the skill is reading ahead and hitting the current character. Official clients may show a single pane or a different font.
A month of CHSL keyboard work beside Tier revision
Week one: lock language and layout, then take three honest ten-minute runs and log scored speed, accuracy, and the keys you missed. Week two: hold accuracy at or above the practice gate even if speed is still short; add number-row work if you might face DEST. Week three: hold the notice’s English or Hindi line for the full ten minutes without fading. Week four: alternate this paper with the other script if you are bilingual, then rest before the lab.
Daily work should stay small: one full timed sitting plus ten minutes on the characters that went red. If accuracy is weak, ignore speed until the red disappears. Touch typing is the only stable way to hold a qualifying line when the lab keyboard is worse than yours. Hunt-and-peck looks fine on a familiar laptop and then dies in a noisy hall. After you qualify, keep a weekly timed run.
