Federal clerical typing is a hiring screen, not SSC CHSL
The US Office of Personnel Management publishes occupational questionnaires and assessment guidance that many federal job announcements still treat as the clerical typing standard. A common line in older OPM and USAJOBS clerical series is about 40 words per minute with a high accuracy bar, often on a short timed passage rather than a ten-minute Indian skill-test clock. India Typing Test’s OPM card is a five-minute QWERTY rehearsal at a 40 WPM practice gate. It is not USAJOBS, not USA Hire, and not a score any agency HR office receives.
Federal announcements vary by series. A GS-4 or GS-5 clerk in one department may ask for a self-certified typing speed. Another may send you to a proctored vendor. A third may skip typing entirely and test Microsoft Office instead. Read the assessment questionnaire and the “How you will be evaluated” block on the announcement you actually applied to. Training on an Indian 35 WPM, ten-minute running-matter paper will not match a five-minute US clerical minute even if both are “government typing.”
What OPM-style clerical work actually looks like after you are hired
Federal clerks type correspondence, case notes, travel vouchers, and names that must match personnel or benefits records. The speed number gets you through a screen. The job punishes transposed Social Security digits, missed capitals in proper names, and messy punctuation in emails that become the record. That is why this practice pack is ordinary US office English, not DEST numerals and not High Court “petitioner/respondent” prose.
Agencies still disagree about whether a certificate from a state workforce office, a community college, or a self-report is enough. OPM does not sit at a browser in Chennai and stamp your result. If the announcement says “must be able to type 40 wpm,” treat that as a floor you should beat on a similar keyboard, then keep a certificate only if HR named an issuer. How USAJOBS assessments differ from this five-minute box
Many modern announcements use USA Hire or an agency-specific occupational questionnaire. You may never see a live passage. You may click “I type 40 wpm or more” and later be asked to demonstrate it in probation. Some older clerical tests still use a timed copy-typing block with an error formula that subtracts for uncorrected mistakes. This page always lets you backspace. That is kinder than some proctored rooms.
Duration here is five minutes because US clerical screens are often shorter than Indian ten-minute papers. The practice gate is 40 WPM with 90 percent accuracy. If your announcement prints 45 WPM or a five-minute error-free requirement, train above this card rather than arguing with it. English only: federal clerical typing is not a Hindi InScript paper. Bring the keyboard you will use at a USAJOBS assessment center if one is named.
Self-certification versus a live federal keyboard sitting
Self-certification is common and easy to game, which is why some supervisors still give a short live test after you start. Practise as if someone will watch. Sit a full five minutes without restarting. Log scored WPM and accuracy. If you only ever sprint 60-second internet tests, you will be surprised by a five-minute clerical copy block.
Do not mix this card with USPS 710/477 data-entry drills or with California county certificates. Those are different employers. OPM guidance is a federal HR reference, not the Postal Service exam and not CalCareers. Open the matching India Typing Test card when the announcement names a different body. Keep a weekly five-minute run if you are applying across several GS clerical series.
Accuracy, numbers, and names that fail federal clerks
Federal text is full of office symbols, dates, and names that look almost right. A missed hyphen in a case number is still an error on a copy-typing test. This rehearsal uses sentences, not a grid. If your announcement is really a data-entry assessment, switch to the USPS card. If it is court reporting, this 40 WPM clerical box is the wrong sport entirely.
Use custom mode on the regular typing-test page for the proper nouns in your target series: facility names, form numbers, city pairs. Then come back to this timed paper so mixed English still holds. Touch typing matters because assessment-center keyboards are rarely the laptop you love. Hunt-and-peck plus a 42 WPM home score often becomes 33 WPM in a quiet but unfamiliar room.
A four-week plan if a USAJOBS clerical announcement is live
Week one: three honest five-minute runs on this card; write down scored WPM, accuracy, and whether you looked at the keys. Week two: stay above 90 percent accuracy even if speed sits at 36. Add a custom list of names from the job description. Week three: hold 40-plus WPM for the full five minutes twice in a row. Week four: one run on an unfamiliar keyboard if you can borrow one, then rest the day before any scheduled assessment.
If the announcement never schedules a live test, still keep the skill. Probation and the first month of GS clerical work are where supervisors notice slow email. This page will not update your USAJOBS profile. It will tell you whether 40 WPM is a comfortable number or a lucky 60-second sprint. Official HR instructions always win if they disagree with a practice site.
Who should ignore this OPM card
Skip it if you are preparing SSC CHSL, a High Court JJA paper, or NCRA stenotype. Those clocks, scripts, and machines are different. Skip it if your federal series is IT, contracting, or a job that never mentions typing. Skip it if you need a California county certificate with a named issuer — that is the CalCareers card.
Use it if a USAJOBS clerical, assistant, or office-automation announcement mentions a typing speed, a self-certification, or an OPM-style clerical assessment. English QWERTY only. Practice, not an appointment with OPM. If a vendor proctors you, their software, their passage, and their error formula decide the outcome.
